SPED 404 – Assessments & Data Use in Special Education

Within this course, participants will develop knowledge and understanding of various research-based and evidence-based instructional practices in the areas of: academic and behavioral data collection – basic terminology, legal and ethical provisions, tools to use in order to create, collect, analyze, and progress monitor; using data to drive instructional practices and ensure progress of students on IEP goals, and determination of state-wide assessments (SBA, WA-AIM, WIDA, etc.) as appropriate. Participants will also develop knowledge of Special Evaluations related to child-find screening, pre-referral, response to intervention (RTI), referral, eligibility procedures, extended school year, and transition procedures to include Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs), and other data monitoring tools to various stakeholders. Participants will demonstrate how to use these results to determine: IEP goals, Accommodations and Modifications, technology needs (low and high tech), and for development and implementation of Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans, to include consideration of acceptance, social skills, and strategies for crisis prevention and intervention. Additional focus on who to communicate with, how often, and confidentiality per FERPA.
